What to do - What to do

The more information we get, the more we want, and the more it drives us crazy.

For years and years, my mother and father, kept telling me the wonderful properties and values of garlic. Now, the medical community has gone on record as to its benefits. Of course, they go a step further and started producing garlic pills, tablets, and supplements. You can take all the garlic supplements you want. As for me, I prefer taking this health additive in its more natural form — i.e. garlic bread, garlic sauce, garlic pasta, and my all time favorite, roasted garlic. Okay, so I probably will spend a lot of time alone. Bur you may rest assured that vampires and the like, will keep their distance as well.

And just how long have you been trying to keep your cholesterol down? Doctors have constantly advocated the reduction of fat in one’s diet. Then they came up with the "good" cholesterol and "bad" cholesterol theory. Olive oil - good. Other oils - bad. In any event, the latest hubbub is a correlation that low cholesterol may indeed be linked to suicide and violence. So for all you people who constantly brag about having low cholesterol, stay clear of me. I wonder if anyone ever checked the cholesterol level of postal employees. Mmmmmm.

And talking about the postal office and continuing on the world is going crazy theme, what about the new stamps the post office wants you to vote on? To date, more than 800,000 individuals have cast their ballot on what stamps they would like to stick on their envelopes. Apparently there will be a series of no less than 150 stamps commemorating crossword pizzles, Crayola crayons, and Tinkertoys, etc. Fortunately, a stamp honoring the hamburger, Howdy Doody, and the American Outhouse has been scrapped. Just give me a plain old 32¢ stamp and let me be. I really don’t need flowers, animals, actresses, events, or cartoons.I am quite certain the philatelists among you will disagree with me. Although, even philatelists would have to agree, I believe, that apparently the public has a stronger desire to select stamps than they do to select the people who govern and spend their money.

One last item that once and for all tells me the world is going crazy. Former teacher, Mary Kay Letourneau, who was jailed for having an affair with thirteen year old boy, is pregnant again The who, what, why, and where is not significant. But what her lawyer said is. According to her attorney, Mrs. Letourneau has very strict moral and religious beliefs and feels that all life is a gift from God. Strict moral and religious beliefs? Who would have thought?

And last, but by no means least, there are now six Great Lakes. Added to Lake Michigan (22,300 mile), Lake Erie (9,910 miles), Lake Superior (31,700 sq. miles), Lake Huron (23,000 sq. miles, and Lake Ontario (7,340 sq. miles) is little old Lake Champlain which is only 435 square miles. What’s wrong with this picture?

Note: Since this column was written, a lot has changed - - - for one thing Mary Kay Letourneu is out of prison - - - and married her one true love. All is well that ends well - - yeah, right!
